In 1997, the acclaimed Lundin/Danemo Quartet album Music for Dancers and Dreamers was released on Stunt Records.

The music on the album had its roots in music released just over 20 years earlier on the ECM label, including the two albums Dansere and Witchi-Tai-To by the Jan Garbarek/Bobo Stenson Quartet.

Garbarek and Stenson’s music heralded a new era for jazz, in which the jazz and improvised music emerging particularly from Scandinavia had a distinct identity and character, quite different from the music coming from jazz’s homeland, the United States. Scandinavians could finally claim as their own a form of jazz rooted in the Scandinavian soul and folk tradition.

Now, 30 and 50 years later respectively, Full Circle is being released, marking the first time that Lundin and Danemo have met Bobo Stenson together in the studio. With bassist Joel Illerhag, representing the third and younger generation, the circle is complete.

As on Music for Dancers and Dreamers, all compositions on Full Circle are written by Lundin and Danemo. The strongly melodic and open-ended music still reaches back 50 years to its roots, while at the same time the compositions and musicians have drawn nourishment from the life and music of the intervening five decades. The three generations meet as equals, playing alongside and in dialogue with one another in music filled with resonance and a sense of perspective.

Fredrik Lundin

Lundin has been a major figure on the Danish and Scandinavian jazz scene since the early 1980s, with a highly diverse body of work as a bandleader, composer and soloist. Over the years, he has received numerous awards both for his playing and his recordings, including five Danish Music Awards (DMA), the Carl Prize, the Ben Webster Prize, as well as both the Honorary Award and the Stamina Award from the composers’ association DJBFA (now Autor).

Among the many musicians and bandleaders he has worked with are the great percussionist Marilyn Mazur and the internationally renowned pianist and bandleader Jon Balke.

Bobo Stenson

Stenson is one of the great shapers of the Scandinavian jazz idiom. As early as the 1960s, he was the preferred accompanist for visiting major international soloists, while at the same time being at the forefront of the emerging and pioneering Swedish jazz scene. Among others, he collaborated with Don Cherry, George Russell and later Jan Garbarek.

From 1988 onwards, he was a member of the Charles Lloyd Quartet, and he has led his own trio since the 1970s. As both a bandleader and a sideman, he has appeared on more than 20 releases by the influential German record label ECM, in addition to countless other recordings.

Peter Danemo

Like Lundin in Denmark, Danemo is one of the most significant musicians of his generation in Sweden. In addition to being one of the most frequently called-upon and versatile drummers in Sweden for several decades—and, while living in Malmö, also in Copenhagen—he has led ambitious ensembles of all sizes over the years. He has also, on several occasions, written for and led the professional Norrbotten Big Band.

His interest in and talent for composition and arranging have also led him to teach these disciplines for several years at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (Musikhögskolan).

Joel Illerhag

Illerhag is a Swedish bassist, composer, sculptor and inventor based in Denmark. He graduated from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. His virtuosic, fearless and stylistically wide-ranging playing can be heard in a wide variety of settings, including several of Fredrik Lundin’s ensembles.
