HJERTESPIL
What does it sound like when a violinist from the Danish island of Fanø, an oud player from Syria, a guitarist from Togo and a jazz saxophonist from Copenhagen come together to reinterpret the unique Danish folk melodies of Sønderho — the sønderhoninger?
The band HJERTRESPIL is the answer
Peter Uhrbrand — violin
Fredrik Lundin — saxophones
Maher Mahmoud — oud
Alain Apaloo — guitars
Thomas Vang — bass
Stefan Pasborg — drums
The project was initiated by saxophonist Fredrik Lundin, who, after spending a year studying sønderhoning with master fiddler Peter Uhrbrand, wanted to create his own interpretation of these beautiful and distinctive Danish folk melodies. Their unique blend of lightness and melancholy had struck a deep chord in him.
Building on Fredrik’s reimagined harmonizations and arrangements, the six musicians have spent the past year developing a colourful, vibrant and compelling musical universe together.
The result is a meeting of traditions and cultures — shaped by the very different musical backgrounds of all six musicians. Danish folk music meets jazz, Middle Eastern traditions and West African influences, creating a sound that is both deeply rooted and open to the world.
Music that speaks to both feet and heart.
